As the Fall season approaches, I am always thankful my clients let me into their lives. And right now the mantra I’m drawn to for myself and so many people I work with is the reminder to be kind to yourself. Long-standing negative self-image issues are so often not true. The negative narrative that lives inside us needs be to kicked to the curb!
I view my job as not only teaching clients how to make smarter choices in the body they’re in, but to make them look at themselves more positively and change that inner dialogue. When I get good feedback, I do feel like I’m making a difference (and see bottom of this column for one client’s most generous viewpoint).
I also love the “body positive/size and age inclusivity” movement happening right now. Many stores and brands are finally acknowledging that people come in all different sizes and shapes, and I look forward to what those changes will bring.
So be kind to yourself – and take time to focus on the things you need to feel your best and most empowered.
Now on to trends. Some nice updates, as you’ll see, but many common themes from years’ past…
top trends

While “Red Pear” is the official Fall Pantone color, all earthtone colors are widely available including rust (and I especially like the “redder” version – almost burgundy), marigold, olive green, teal and chocolate brown. Wear in sweaters, pants, purses – whatever! It’s been a while since the browns and rusts have been in favor, so now is the time to shop if you like these colors.

Shoes! Boots and booties in all heel heights are still big. I’m a fan of flats, loafers and low heels as they look current and are typically more practical and comfortable! Speaking of casual, I’m seeing more of the “Sneaker Bootie” look out there. While I love it for the teenage set, I think it’s harder to hit the right note as a “woman of a certain age” to make that look work well.

Honorable Mentions…here are noteworthy items you might (or might not) want to try:
- Prairie dresses – think “Little House on the Prairie” with a fashion update
- Rainbow dresses – with many bands of color. Especially fun for a night out on the town
- Higher-rise pants – a great trend that accommodates many figures
- Bootcuts are back in for jeans – but don’t wear them cropped. And you may see them worn with flats or sneakers, but I still prefer a little heel
thought I’d share…
Going back to the topic about being your best self, I just got the following testimonial from a client that really hit home. There’s a little bit about me and how I helped her, which is great, but it’s also about embracing change.
“… Taking the time out for me allowed me to accept new looks, colors and textures I hadn’t dreamed about. You helped me find ways to see my graying hair and changing skin as positives. I tried a whole new palette and looks I didn’t know were possible for me, and I appreciate your careful observations, skilled choices and warm encouragement to try new things. I did a total reset this Fall, and while I’m not sure I’ll totally enjoy aging gracefully, I’m getting there and in a much better mindspace than I was. Thank you again!”
