Top Trends Spring 2016
It’s been a crazy few months — Barry and I are rightsizing to a new home! If you’re familiar with Marie Kondo’s book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, her concepts of the “tidying up festival” and “thanking things with gratitude as they move out the door” certainly make sense when moving. I’ll be happy to be settled in our new place soon.
Speaking of moving, I’ve been doing more work with clients to stage their home before a sale. I’m proud to say one of my clients sold her house on the very first showing! It truly makes me happy when I’m able to help my clients so quickly and take some of the stress away from hard-to-manage situations.
My favorite colors for Spring are also calming and comforting — evoking sunset and sky — Pantone’s Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue. These colors are everywhere, from clothes to nails to accessories, and may even help you feel more centered when life gets in the way.
Overall, there’s quite a bit of mix & match in this season’s trends, as well as a re-appearance of some favorites from last year. See what works for you!
top trends
The Bare Shoulder. Donna Karan came up with the concept of the “cold shoulder” top in the 90’s and today it’s back in a big way. This trend seems to work well on most women, and is an unexpected way to look alluring (but be careful of showing those bra straps).
Laces, Knots, Buckles & Fringe – Oh My! It’s all about the details this season, and adding some of these embellishments is a great way to update your basics. Buckles and laces on dresses, tops, shoes, and handbags. Embrace the frills and have some fun.
Color Stripes. Classic stripes are being updated in a rainbow of bright colors. As with any stripe, skinny is the easy-to-wear choice and be aware of where they are on your body for the most flattering look. The traditional black and white / navy and white are still must-haves!
Athleisure. The trend of wearing exercise clothes as a way of life is seemingly here to stay. Sporty mesh and net tops and jackets are a fun substitute for girly lace. It’s a great way to be comfy and cute at the same time!
Denim. Done up and Destoyed designers are showing us demin choices in so many ways. The jean dress is more popular than ever in many fabrications and styles. Frayed bottom jeans in cropped and longer lengths can be a DIY project. Just carefully cut a straight line across the legswith chalk and cut with a sharp pair of scissors. Pop in the washing machine and dryer and trim for a uniform look. Voila!
Cropped Bottoms… wide leg pants and even jumpsuits are trending and a great way to show off those ankles! It’s so important to pick the right shoes to pull this look off. Think pretty sandals, heels, wedges or espadrilles.
Romance Springs Eternal – florals, bell sleeves, lace, soft ruffles worn loose and ultra feminine are all Spring options. Make it just a little bit sexy and pair with something more structured like anke-length skinny’s or a blazer. Delicate jewelry works well as a finishing touch.
Global Style – ethnic prints, embroidery and fringe hit all the boho high notes. Safari jackets and army green pants (and dresses) work well, and turquoise jewelry can help elevate your look. Some of the items I’m seeing are pretty “wild”, but there are tamer versions you can try out too. Also maybe think vintage vs. new…
Pajama Party! PJ’s, slips and robes worn outside the bedroom are a minor but interesting trend. Luxe fabrics and tapered pants highlight the most modern look. I remember wearing some fun PJ outfits in the 90’s in navy and black.
Accessories
Purses – the saddlebag is having a moment. Rounded bottom, and often worn across the body. Both Coach and Kate Spade have versions I love. And don’t forget the tassel!
Shoes and Sandles – block heels are in, as are laces, pointy toes, slides, mules and espadrilles.
And please, don’t forget to like me on Facebook or write a YELP review! It means a lot – thank you!
