Top Trends Spring/Summer 2014

fluidFluid Fits.  No more skin tight dresses!  There are lots of fluid fits that look great on almost all shapes and sizes.  Wear your clothes a little looser this season and enjoy the comfort!  Be careful not to go too oversized – you still need to show your shape.

Buttoned up or down.  Dresses and shirts in breezy fabrics are going strong. Fit and flare shapes are big this year and available in lot of  fabrics. You can wear these loose or cinched in every style, from cool to classic.

worldWorld Flair.  World market/global accents in clothes and accessories are back and pair well with spring neutrals. Make like a world traveler and choose details like embroidery fringe or beading – you’ll look great wherever you’re going!

orchidPastel Sweetness.  Spring usually brings the lightness and brightness of pastels, and they are back in full swing. I especially love all the beautiful shades of blue, pink and orchid that are really the standouts this year.  Pair with white and other neutral colors for a chic look.  If you don’t want to wear the color all over, try a pretty pastel handbag in your favorite shade as another great way to enjoy this trend.

Nude is in – and I don’t mean naked.  As a color trend, you can wear it super-simple or glitzy.  Either way, choose a tone that flatters your personal skin color, and keep the look fluid, not tight.

Not-so-girly Floral.  Check out the new “sophisticated modern” and sharp florals available this season.  With such a strong statement, make sure to keep the structure of the garments clean and simple.  You won’t want to add ruffles or fussy details to this one to keep it fresh.

Preppy Handbook Anyone?  Classic looks with a preppy, polished feel are everywhere. This Spring’s take includes monograms on bags and necklaces, pullover sweaters and edgiermonogrampearls (these aren’t your grandma’s pearls) with details like spikes and studs to make the outfits a little edgier.  Spring jewelry that is airy works well, and is architectural, but delicate.  You can also layer different lengths of your favorite small necklaces to give you new look.

trackpGood Sports.  A more dressed-up version of the sporty look has been huge in the past seasons, and the trend continues this year. I have seen a lot of skinny, but dressy track pant styles paired with dressier  feminine shoes and pretty tops.  If you have the shape for it, why not?

boyfBoyfriend jeans are the denim silhouette of the season.  Roll up the hem, and buy a slightly looser version of skinny jeans to make a comfy and fashionable statement.  Keep the cuff no shorter than just above your ankle bone and make sure the roll is not puffy. Since this style highlights your shoes, put on a pretty pair!  Ankle strap shoes are a right-now cute addition.

Wear with caution.  Some of the new trends this season are my least favorite looks.  Probably overly harsh to say that way, but overalls and midriff baring crop tops are being shown, and tend to not flatter most feminine shapes.  Wear these at your own risk 🙂

Shoes

Slip on ssneakerneakers are a new casual footwear trend. You can find them in eye-catching colors and with interesting details, such as perforated or laser-cut detail and animal prints.  They are comfortable and easy – not particularly my taste – and a big trend this season.

Pointy flats and D’Orsay styles are everywhere.  The side cut-out makes these styles especially great for warm weather.  My favorite, and most enduring pointy toes style is the almond shape (as you may have read here before!).

With summer comes sandal weather, and there are a great many trends to choose from:

  • Fancy sandals – lots of glitz
  • Hippie style/double strap slip-ons like Birkenstock are back, but more feminine in metallic or shiny leather with gold stud and chain details
  • Flat pretty sandals and gladiators are very big again this season. I love them in nude and natural leather, including not-too-shiny metallics.

Bring out your pink and orchid-tinted lipsticks and gloss to look fresh for Spring. I also like a sheer pink nail polish for a quick and easy manicure. My favorite right now is Sweet Tooth from Clinique. Christian Dior Nail Glow polish is all the rage, but a little pricey.  These colors enhance your natural nails instead of covering them.
