Top Trends, Fall/Winter 2014
Knit Wear Everywhere: Chunky knits are as on-target as fine gauge knits. Add a big new warm-and-cozy sweater, or even try a knit look from head to toe. Fair Isle prints, textured or handmade looks are all in style, and be mindful of choosing thinner over bulky if you have a more curvy figure.
Oversized outerwear: This trend started last year and continues with cuddly styles that are simple, chic, and flattering. Robe coats (hip length to ankle-grazing), shearling (real or faux), down and Parkas all fit the bill. Make sure to try them on with bulkier pieces underneath to make sure they’ll fit no matter what. And unless you are fairly tall, plan to keep the coat no more than 3/4 length.
Sporty luxe continues: This great trend takes the comfort and ease of athletic wear into daily life. Upscale sweatpants, embellished pullovers and minimalist white sneakers top the list of what to incorporate. Pair these slouchy looks with a more structured top or bottom. Perhaps a fitted cashmere sweater with silky sweatpants? The key is to mix and match – don’t go sporty top to bottom – and enjoy the comfy stretch waist!
Camouflage/military chic: Pretty versions of the traditional camouflage pattern done in non-traditional colors look fresh this season and are surprisingly versatile when paired with feminine accents or shapes. Steer clear of oversize items and traditional all green patterns.
Fall color choices: Dark reds and blues are in this Fall, as are pastels in warm wool fabrications. One of my favorite looks is a vivid sky blue pastel shade paired with black. Greys are still a big choice this season, in every shade and tone (even for nails!) as well as brown accents. Try brown in shoes, belts, handbags and jackets. I like brown accessories worn with black, grey or a dark blue.
Nature-inspired prints: Florals, birds, leaves, blossoms and other natural wonders are a fresh take on an existing theme. I especially love the flattering look of a print with a dark background with a medium-to-small design space somewhat close together. If you’re not up for a dress or blouse with a lot of design, a pretty handbag or scarf could be just the touch you need.
Animal prints: Always a Fall “do”, this year’s version is smaller, tamed and quieter. Think small leopard prints, or a subtle snakeskin with a neutral background. It’s just a softer, more natural version.
Shoes and Boots: Continuing the relaxed theme for Fall, comfortable flats are now seen on fashionable women everywhere. There’s also a trend toward chunky lug soles that give your fall staples a more rugged spin.
Tall boots — from equestrian to over-the-knee — are still popular, and mod styles with 60’s flavor are having a resurgence.
For more formal looks, bold t-strap heels, wedges and cut out heels with pointy toes are the rage in the fashion pages.
Get Real.
This non-trend trend is to wear stylish, sensible and uncomplicated clothes that are tailored and in the best of fabrics. You want it to look “effortless”. Blazers, shift dresses, sheath dresses and skirts all fit into this trend — nothing too theatrical, impractical or tight. Again, it’s a quality-first mentality that seems like it’s here to stay.

Because mascara is an item that needs to be replaced frequently, I am always looking for an inexpensive version that works fabulously. My favorite right now is Cover Girl ClumpBuster Water Resistant in Very Black. It’s cheap and great. It does not smear or flake and lasts all day. I’m on my 3rd tube!
My fall lipstick colors of choice are Bobbi Brown Rose and Lilac — dabbed on lightly with a little clear gloss over for shine. If this is too much color for you, check out Bobbi Brown Nude — it’s great with a strong eye look.
