Top Trends Fall/Winter 2021
Time for cozy sweaters, hot mocha and my favorite fashion season, fall! I do think fall clothes are the best with all the texturing, layers and colors that come into play. Plus, of course, boots.
Even still, the pandemic has changed our reality in so many ways. While fashion still has its place, some are being a little more intentional in their choices. For many of my clients this has meant making peace with their changing bodies, choosing comfortable — but beautiful and enjoyable — fashion. And for some, including me, it has also included going outside our comfort zone to try new things (more about that later — but no, I am not wearing heels yet!). It can even mean doing our best to enhance what we can in our day-to-day life experiences.
And if your closet is one place that’s not quite as “enhanced” as it could be, I might suggest a Closet Detox. I have been helping many clients who want to remove the clutter and make their closets more intentional and updated. It can be refreshing to clean out the old to make way for the new, plus you have the added benefit of easily finding the clothes you feel great wearing. Keeping unused or ill-fitting clothes can steal your energy, time and peace, and I’m happy to help in the weeding out process if you need any. It’s a big part of what I do!
And now, time for fall trends!
Comfort is still king, but all sorts of fun trends have morphed into the fall scene.
1. Sweater Knits
This trend includes sweater vests, dresses and matching knit tops and bottoms (sort of elevating sweats). I love these cozy choices and have always appreciated knits as a comfy, warm and flattering way to get dressed. You can pair knitwear with sandals, sneakers or boots.
2. Suits and Blazers
Hard to believe, but suits and blazers are having a trendy moment. The key is wearing them casually – suits with flats, or blazers with jeans (especially long blazers look “in the moment” with scrunched sleeves). And don’t forget the low-key attitude!
3. Looser Bottoms
Fluid and roomier fits are now available in jeans and pants, with less focus on being body-conscious tight. Pair with a more fitted top, or half-tuck a flowy one in to balance the extra volume. Also, I do still like skinny pants, but no need to be super snug!
4. Shackets!
Truly it’s a shirt mixed with a jacket. This might be tougher to pull off for some, but done with thought can be cute and fun. I’ve seen lots of these in plaid, corduroy, denim, leather and flannel. Pair with jeans or leggings, and can be worn as a shirt, open with a shell underneath, or even as a light jacket. (I just snagged the one on the left from Target’s designer sale!).
5. SHOES! Lug Soles, Clogs & Boots
I seem to have a lot to say about shoes this time.
Lug soles on boots, loafers and even some heels is on trend, and to me, a great shoe to keep you on solid footing. I fondly remember a pair of black lug sole loafers I had in the 90’s, and still love my black suede knee-high boots. This style gives a casual edginess to dresses and tunics.
Boots are back, especially TALL ones. These combine well with so many looks, and heeled or flat, they are always flattering and a super-easy way to look pulled together.
Clogs are also having a nice moment. Like the Danish pairs from bygone (but certainly updated) these shoes are convenient to throw on and kick off. Many pretty styles to choose from, including some that incorporate shearling on the outside!
6. Western Wear Influences
Cowboy boots, and Western-styled handbags and shirts have been popping up quite a bit. If you’re a Country music fan or just want to incorporate a new trend into your everyday, you should be able to find it pretty easily. Think “Ralph Lauren on a Ranch” aesthetic.
