Top Trends Fall/Winter 2016

As you all know, my goal is to help women and men of all shapes and sizes feel good about themselves and dress in a way that makes them feel empowered and confident. Since this season’s trends feel less “dictatorial” than in years past, I’m loving the range of options I can find for my clients.

Feeling good about your body is a big confidence-builder, and I just learned about a body image documentary called Embrace (based on Taryn Brumfitt’s journey) that talks about this very issue and why so many women are at war with their bodies. It’s being shown around the country (and the world!) and will be coming to Northbrook Court on Thursday, January 19th at 7:30 pm. Click here for the link to the trailer, and here if you want to buy tickets.

Hope to see you there!

statement sleeves

Statement Sleeves…supersize cuffs, billowy volume, ruffles, bellsleeves and sleeves that extend beyond the wrist are all popular and can be a style flourish all your own. Though difficult to wear with a jacket as the sleeves may not fit, it’s a different, fresh look. Have fun with it and feel free to go a little bit out of your comfort zone.

romance

Dark Romance
. Think pink or black, in florals, velvet,  lace or even bits of leather. If you’re in the mood for gothic, soft-focus fashion that feels a little bit edgy, try it on for size. Goes great with those over-the-knee boots that are in fashion right now too!

brocade

Brocade Plus. Brocade has been in for a while (think rich, mixed prints with metallic threads and a shiny texture), and is available in a wide range of styles and prices. It can get  bulky since it’s generally a heaver material, so go for clean lines in clothes. I do love brocade slim pants with a solid sweater. As for the “Plus” part, I’m really liking embroidered items such as shoes, purses, jackets and collars. Adds opulence and beautiful old-world charm.

Turtlenecks. Worn on their own, or under jackets and even dresses, definitely seeing more of these around and are classic pieces to have.

puff love

Puff Love. The update to this trend from last year is a longer length and not overly-stuffed version. These jackets are the new “sporty cool” and will keep you warm and trendy this winter. Though there are a lot of bright fun colors to choose from, I think you’ll get more wear from going neutral (black, silver, marsala, olive).

velvet vibes

Velvet Vibes. Beautiful, soft and luxurious velvet is one of my favorite trends this season. In the past, formal jackets and dresses were typical, but what looks very “now” is velvet in less structured pieces. I’m seeing this material in motorcycle jackets, pants/jumpsuits and tops, shoes, boots and dresses, as well as in more traditional shapes. Looks great smooth or crushed.

navy military coats

Military. In other coat news, the military style is back in a big way. Look for great sailor, naval detail with a classic, tailored line. Find a new trench coat or jacket in many contemporary colors, including Navy or olive green.

Hot colors:
Speaking of colors, this season is all about wearing red and blue, or camel/tan. For Blue, think sky blue to navy, for Red, go wine to cherry.  For tan or camel, soft warm taupe is on trend.

Shoes. The peep toe bootie was a great transitional look, but  there more modern updates to classic shoes and boots now. Mary Janes with block heels, modern loafers, suede booties that are snug around the ankle, platform rock-star sandals and over the knee boots are popular and can freshen you up.

Accessories, Bags and Jewelry. In a continuation of the saddlebag’s popularity, why not update with one of the new whipstitch versions, or try one out that has large rounded links (popular for both purses and jewelry).  Animal prints in bags and other accessories are still big (especially leopard). As for jewelry, some refreshes include modern chokers (not my favorite), long pendants and long, linky earrings.

Laura Mercier Raspberry Ripple lipstick

make up finds

My new favorite lip color with staying power is Laura Mercier’s Raspberry Ripple creamy color balm. Love the color and the lasting power. It’s a department store buy, but a pretty, value-driven splurge.
