Fall/Winter 2023
Fall has finally arrived! And while I enjoyed the extra sun into October, I’m ready for the leaves to turn and for fun autumn activities – including apple-picking, walks in the woods and fall decluttering. Fall decluttering you say? While not fun for everyone, I personally think fall is a perfect time to declutter our closets and homes. I just read a great article in Consumer Reports why it’s healthy to keep your home uncluttered, no matter the time of year, (and includes a few links to other articles on how to determine what to keep (or not), and even how to sell the items you no longer need). If you’re interested in learning more, here you go. And, as always, I’m here to help too!
One of my other pleasures is shopping, both for me as well as my clients – and not just online. While the overall selection at stores isn’t quite what it used to be, I love checking out the latest items and styles, and seeing what people are actually buying. I like the fresh inspiration, new ideas, and the anticipation of what will appeal to my clients.
It’s my pleasure to make suggestions and see what works to freshen up and empower your wardrobe as the seasons change. And finding the fun & trendy new bag or shoe, or a quietly classic jacket, hopefully puts a smile on both our faces. It does make me happy, knowing my clients feel good and hopefully more confident, with fresh looks that work for them. All in a days work 🙂
Fall/Winter trends
Fall colors (not the leaves). I’m seeing a lot of red and brown this fall, and they can, but don’t have to be, together.
Bold, eye-catching red is back in a big way and it’s perfect if you want to make a statement. Tops or sweaters are great of course, but can also try a new red handbag or a head to toe look! A pretty red lipstick is also a great way to play with this color (though be careful it’s a shade that works with your skin tone – really true for any red item).
And while brown is more of a classic fall color, it’s being shown in so many great shades of chocolate, caramel, toffee and light café au lait tans that can be worn in so many ways and is beautiful worn tonally (wearing different shades of a single color together). Other, more unexpected fall shades you will find in the stores include purples, pinks, and more of a new trend…ice blue!
Lady Jackets: think Chanel–style jackets and sweaters. These are available at every price point, and were in almost every store I was in over the last few weeks. While very classic, I suggest not pairing these with matching bottoms. Contrast the pieces with jeans or other modern pants to give it a fresher take.
Wide leg pants are very popular. And they can be flattering, but I find that the pleat shown on so many of the pants make it a little harder to wear. First, make sure the pleat looks good on you if it has it, and then ensure it fits well at the waist and hips. Many are also shown with a very long hem. If you try this look, be careful not to trip! For those more petite, a cropped pair of wide-leg pants might be a good choice. As for coordinating shoes, you can certainly wear them casually with sneakers, but I think they look best with a slightly higher heel.
Utility and Cargo looks: This is a trend I continue to love and for some strange fashion reason cargo pants are back in a big way this season. These pants are always easy to wear and look great on many body types. My favorite look is an army green pant paired with contrasting feminine tops, and a pretty shoe or boot. I was recently asked if cargo-pants are work-appropriate. To me, clean looking lines (maybe without the drawstrings), paired with nicer tops is great for most office settings. Rougher materials, maybe not as much. Also, make sure pocket placement compliments your shape.
Leather weather: leather pants, skirts, dresses or leather accents on many items are still fresh and fun to give a little edge to your look… including quality shoes and boots. For pants, you want to make sure they hug your body without being too tight or too loose. I must say the quality of faux letter improves every year too, making it an easy and affordable choice for many.
Classic tailoring is always in style, and suits and blazers are still hot as well. If you’re going for this look, choose a pant suit rather than a skirt to look most updated. And Preppy styling is back (reminds me of the 80’s). What’s old is new again, with a fresh, yet undeniably retro take!
Speaking of Shoes… some of the most popular shoes and boots for this fall include knee-high boots, loafers, mules and ballet flats. I like ballet flats that have a little support through the foot and maybe even a small wedge or heel. I like the Abeo or Vionic brands. Steer clear of rounded toes, and either go with a squared off, almond-shaped or even pointed toe. And check out the Q&A for more on sneakers…
Also, wanted to mention Belts seem to be back which makes sense after a few years of comfort styling being so prevalent. If you are thinking to update with one, more narrow belts seems to be on trend (and could look good with a wide-pant leg and tucked-in top!) but really depends on your body type and outfit.
Jewelry is a great way to add a touch of personality to your outfit, so look for pieces that make you feel confident and beautiful. I do love the “neck mess” trend and find it fun to create my own versions. The goal is to mix three or more necklaces that work well with each other. This trend takes a little careful consideration to make it look effortless; play with lots of different lengths, try different textures and just have fun!

Question: I want to get away from my heavier tote bag that I carry all day and hurts my shoulders. I’d like to do something more manageable – maybe smaller and less heavy?
Obviously, smaller, lightweight purses are plentiful, and I love crossbody bags for that purpose. The diagonal line adds style, but also takes the pressure off your shoulders. Lo & Sons makes an excellent leather one called The Pearl, and for a sportier look you might consider canvas or nylon. Once you’ve chosen the bag, here are a few other tips that might help you slim down the contents of your purse:
- Downsize your wallet – go as small as you can, and minimize the amount of credit cards, cash and coins you carry. Consider using your phone for payments (i.e Apple Pay, Google Pay), and add any gift cards you can to your phone via apps. Truly a lifesaver!
- Clean out your purse regularly. Anything you don’t use often, you can remove. As I’ve learned over the years, your purse does not need to have everything.
- Don’t forget to remove receipts and other papers weekly.
