Top Trends Spring/Summer 2021

Suzanne NewmanEven with Spring sunshine, no one can deny what a challenging year this has been. We all have experienced unique issues, and if fashion has taken a backseat to self-care and dealing with life on both an external and personal level, so be it. That’s been true for me, but staying grateful and helping others with what I can keeps me grounded. And walking – lots of walking.

Truly, my solace and joy this past year has been taking daily walks in the woods near my home and observing all the beauty each season offers. In the past, I would have chosen to do exercise indoors in the cold weather.  Not this year. I learned to do it outside, asking my most seasoned winter-loving friends what clothes and shoes they loved. I was a leg-warmer wearing, head-banded, and waterproof hiking-booted walker – come sun, rain, or snow!

These past few weeks, I’ve been styling a great lightweight wind/rain jacket, comfy running shoes, (even though I don’t run) and my Madewell visor – not-so-cute, but practical. For Summer, I’m ready to switch to comfortable dresses and walking sandals (Teva and Chaco are two of my favorites).

I’m sure many of you have become walking experts too, but here are a few clothes-oriented tips I’ve picked up if helpful:

  • Start out dressing a little too cool for the weather, you will get warmer as you walk!
  • Thin layers work best as you can strip down as you go.
  • The right footwear to keep you comfortable is key. I prefer lightweight running shoes, but so many good choices. Don’t forget good socks, maybe on the thinner side.
  • A great small crossbody bag (like Hershel’s) is helpful to hold your phone and keys. My preference is a somewhat wider strap version to put less pressure on my shoulder.  Mini backpacks can work too, but it might be harder to reach your phone if needed.

Are we ready to get dressed again?

Are we ready to get dressed again? This cartoon from the New Yorker says it all! And while I’m not about to give up my more relaxed clothes, I am about to brave talking about a few newer Spring/Summer fashion trends. I should also mention that many cozier trends are still with us, including Athleisure and lots of tie dye in shirts, dresses, and accessories. Some of the newer things I’m seeing, include:

1. Not-so-skinny jeans

not so skinny jeansI’ve gotten many questions about whether skinny jeans are truly “over”, and while I don’t think they’re gone completely, it might be the time to choose a slim/straight jean or even a wider leg, high rise jean instead. A slim jean is a skinny jean that doesn’t hug but skims your leg and is still flattering. I would caution to not go oversized all over as balanced proportions make you look better. The high-rise “mom jean” is out there, and while it’s not a look for me, certainly try it, and others, on for size.

2. Nap dresses

nap dressesA fun name for comfortable, longer, prairie or tiered dresses that you can live in all day. I’m a big fan, although I feel like a soft belt at the waist makes this look more flattering. They can be found in many solids, florals, or prints. Knit dresses are in a similar category, and either of these with a casual, updated sandal make a perfect “at home to outdoor” outfit.

3. Puffy sleeves (& ruffles) are back!

puff sleevesThese are big for tops, t-shirts and dresses, and a cute way to make a statement on your Zoom call. An easy way to wear this trend is a white puff-sleeve shirt or blouse worn with jeans (and pink works too, of course).

4. Checkmate!

check mateChecks also seem to be a big trend (maybe spurred on by Queen’s Gambit fame?) with checkerboard prints showing up in lots of colors and patterns. Contrasting colors in pastels or summer brights work well and feel bold and dramatic. Try it out in on a top or a tote – the choices are popping up in all kinds of places!

5. Comfy Footwear

Don’t neglect your feet when updating your summer casual style, and it couldn’t be easier this year. With so many easy-to-wear options, it seems we are gently easing back into the real world. Birkenstocks, sneakers (lots of white), espadrilles, and comfort-friendly platform sandals (or “flatforms”) will freshen up most outfits. So far no heels in sight for me!
