Top Trends Fall/Winter 2019
I just came upon an old article from Today’s Chicago Woman where I was featured as a “transition expert” in a number of makeovers. Even so many years later, we are still enamored as a culture by the idea of transformation, and that a little help can make a big difference in our lives. Some of my favorite movies have scenes that showcase this: Disney’s Cinderella (I especially love the dress that the animals make), Working Girl’s Melanie Griffith, The Devil Wears Prada’s Anne Hathaway, even Steve Carrell’s character in Crazy Stupid Love gets a great man-makeover after his marriage hits a rough patch.
To me, what’s so great about the makeover is the FUN of putting your best self forward in a slightly new way. It’s not about being competitive or reaching perfection, it’s about being your best you. It’s no surprise when you look good, you feel better and more confident, and that’s the energy you want to put out there. Here’s me in my tweed glory – 13 years ago…
top trends
Timeless tweed, checks and plaid. Tweed has consistently been a Fall staple, but it’s back in a new fresh way in more than jackets and blazers. Lots of pants, purses, belts and more are showcasing this pattern, and the new twists make it a little more fun to wear, not just as a classic for this season.
Fall neutrals tie in nicely with tweed, and the colors seem to be heavy in beige, creams, tans, taupe and cognac. Black is still prominent, but definitely seeing less grey.
Other new colors are popping up too. Purples, oranges, golden yellow and green. Be thoughtful about pairing bright colors with neutrals – you need to take care the palette looks good.
Soft chenille knits. Happy to see these comfy sweaters and tops back in an array of colors. You may remember these from the 90’s and even have some still in your closet. Probably worth it to refresh a sweater or two, and these pair nicely with leggings or jeans.
“Roar is More”. It’s an animal menagerie out there with an array of prints from Zebra, Leopard, Tiger and reptile (snake and crocodile). Always a wardrobe favorite for me!
Leather weather. Leather, real or vegan, is a true outfit-maker this Fall. Leather leggings, jackets, trim on shirts or other inventive shapes will bring you fashionably into the cool, crisp weather. Try leather leggings with a soft (chenille?) sweater for a downtown chic vs. biker chick look. I also really like lightweight leathers and suedes. Just got a very pretty tan faux suede jacket with a client that will go with a lot of styles.
Nighttime shimmer: I’m seeing a lot of glimmer and gold around, becoming more a mainstay as well as for a special night out. The 80’s type shimmer is a lot of fun, and can amp up your look.
Fall and Winter florals are still blooming – especially those with dark backgrounds I’ve seen some florals paired with both animal prints like leopard as well as with leather. My personal version of this is to pair my dark floral tunics and dresses with my faux leopard print jacket. Feel free to add texture like lace and demin for a more updated look.
There’s a chill in the air! Faux fur coats are all the rage, especially teddy bear coats that are available in all hues and are so soft and comfy. There’s even a high-end faux fur company (with Chicago roots), Maison Atia, that donates to PAWS with every purchase.
Shoes: Many of the same styles are back, but I’m seeing square toed shoes, Mary Janes with a decent heel, sneakers, mules, lug sole loafers and boots and loafers in fresh styles. Knee-high boots are still big too. I’m a fan of Vionic, Abeo, Ecco, London Fly, Dansko and other brands shoes that provide good arch support for those that need it.
And as always, I’d love to help you with any questions, shopping, organizing or whatever you need. Please feel free to call or text me at 847-721-0607, or email suzanne@findfashionhappiness.com any time!
