5 Tips for Fall 2020

Suzanne Newman

I can’t believe how crazy this year has been. Aside from COVID and the overarching change in how we live (note my new Zoom pic – photo cred David Sutton), there have been fires, hurricanes, riots, a hot political campaign and much more. You might be asking yourself if there’s really any headspace for fashion at this time? Well, my answer is maybe…just a little. And with that my hope is to take your mind off things for a few minutes by sharing a few tips and tricks to make the most of this time.

tip # 1 – be kind to yourself (fun is good)

So my clothes might be a touch tighter right now, and that’s OK! Even if we’re not perfect with our healthy habits, it’s important to hold on to things that make us feel good about ourselves.  Finding moments of joy, taking life more slowly – whatever we can do to give ourselves the confidence we need to be our best selves.  Some days, it might be as simple as showering, doing your makeup and hair, and putting on a cute outfit – even if you only have Zoom calls. It could also be having fun with your individual style and treating yourself to something new & different to make you feel good.

tip # 2 – fashion is all about comfort

Speaking of new outfits, I’m only going to spend a little time on trends. The best advice I have is to find the things that work for YOU in this tipped askew world!

  • Generally speaking, comfort is still king. It can be matching sweatsuits or lougewear sets in tie-dye, camo or other subtle print. Solids are great too! They are often paired with narrow leg joggers – not just leggings. I’m loving super soft, cozy, velvety, cottony fabrics, and color also has a place in “comfort” too. To me, lighter and mid-tone blues, pinks and oatmeal neutrals are just more soothing.
  • Outdoorwear.  It’s officially coat season, and comfortable, oversized items are being shown in puffy, quilted and shearling styles. If you plan to keep up outside visits, I’d invest in something especially warm, and grab a few blanket scarfs or Sherpa blankets to keep you bundled. I plan to purchase these comfy Birkenstock clogs (to replace my summer Birks) with shearling inside that are easy to take on and off for Fall visits!
  • I’m not sure if masks can be considered a trend, but I have been getting questions on my favorites. Many of my clients love the Athleta masks, both versions (I haven’t tried). I do like this mask from Amazon – really like how it’s just one piece, doesn’t bother my ears and dries so fast after you wash it (they are not medical grade masks though).
  • And here’s my mask hack – I have a favorite inexpensive peppermint lip balm (Eco Lips Mongo Kiss / Whole Foods) that I wear under my mask. The fresh mint smell makes breathing easier and keeps an energizing scent close to me. Worth a try!
  • Finally, I’ve been asked a few times on the best ways to tie a pashmina or blanket scarf.  I found this video on YouTube which does a really nice job showing step-by-step SO many lovely ways to look fashionable or warm, depending on your mood!

tip # 3 – online shopping do’s and don’ts

While many stores are open, I’ve been doing more online shopping and it’s working for me. Those new special items add a little spark to my life, and just thought I’d share a few tips I’ve learned along the way.
  • Size matters:  Really look at the measurements provided on a store online website, either for the garment or the body.  Make sure you take your own measurements as well and use when shopping.
  • Read the reviews (look at most recent first)!  There is lots of truth there that will help you make better choices, especially if you can find a reviewer whose size matches more with your own.
  • Only shop sites with easy return policies – one less hassle to deal with
  • Amazon Wardrobe. Maybe you’ve heard about this, but I’ve been taking advantage of this new-ish service from Amazon. It’s free for Prime members and you can try clothes or shoes on at home before you buy them. Just return what you don’t want.  Over the summer I picked out 10 sandals to find the one perfect, waterproof pair for walking. It was super easy!
  • If you have gift cards, I’d use them sooner vs. later. Make sure you get the value!
  • Target, yes Target.  I’ve been very pleased with the online service from Target. Shopping has been really easy, with a variety of sizes and cute styles. Returns are very easy. I’m a fan.

tip # 4 – Zoom calls 101

I’ve done a few classes on “Looking and Feeling your Best on Zoom”, and here are some more fashion-forward lessons if helpful.

  • Best lighting comes from the front – not the side or above (bright light from behind will wash out your face). Try to find a space that is quiet with the best lighting.
  • Camera on the device should be eye level. You might need to raise up your computer or device if you can.
  • Make up should be natural. Maybe brighten the eyes a little bit, and don’t forget a natural-but-better (rosy) lipstick!
  • For hair, you just need to make sure the front is perfect and styled in an overall flattering way.
  • Accessories: use non-glare glasses if possible, and be aware how jewelry and scarves look on camera and how they can change the sound.

tip # 5 – don’t be shy to ask for help!

Now more than ever we need to stay in contact with friends and family, and have both easy and tough conversations about how to navigate these times. There is no one right answer, but we’re all in this together!

And I am happy to help too!  I’ve been working with clients in all kinds of ways. One client tried on outfit after outfit while I was on her patio. I walked through a client’s basement via Zoom to help her declutter.  For another, we organized her knick-knacks via Zoom.  I’ve even done “how to look your best for an interview on Zoom” consults. It’s all about being flexible!

So when the coffee kicks in and you’re in the mood to organize or want to look your best, please seize the moment and contact me.  I can be there right with you, giving suggestions and walking you through it. I know the dividends, and they are so positive. Your life and/or home just gets a little bit easier and calmer – and we could all use that.

Truly, I am here to be a sounding board for fashion and makeup advice, organizing and decluttering and I really love doing this.
